Old Quarter Corner on Bear Branch

An old quarter corner (lighter / pine knot) on Bear Branch in Maplesville, Alabama, with a location tag on a tree. This was also the corner for Red Mountain Timber.

Rough time getting to it, swampy. Black mud is scary – sink to your hips in it and you cannot recover.

Quarter corners like this one were set when the public land survey divided Alabama into sections. Many of them were lighter knots – resin-rich pine that lasts for generations in the ground – and finding them in a creek bottom in Chilton County is part of the job.
